Aero kit and stone chips

My replacement MCS Works has the Aero kit fitted. I recently went on a track day, and now the front bumper is peppered in stone chips. The bonnet however is remarkably unscathed.

I did 9 track days outing in my previous car, and it did not suffer from excesive stone chipping. I was wondering if its because the Aero kit paint job might be inferior to a normal bumper paint job - softer paint perhaps?

Anyone else think the Aero kit suffers badly from stone chipping? Where do you think I would stand with getting it done on warranty? - I wouldn't be telling them its been to a track day..

My car is DS with 11,000 miles - looks like the aero front bumper has done closer to 100,000 miles...

Honestly, I don't think a Dealer would cover that under warranty. No paint job is stone chip proof, and as such, it's going to happen sooner or later that some paint is compromised from chips.

Stone chips here too, but like ned78 says they are gotta catch up with you
sooner or later. I notice the chips around the fog lights when cleaning.

the bumpers are thinner and more flexible on the aero kit, the paint also seems to then be more prone to stone chips, it is just part and parcel with aero kits

Did you know that aero kit bumpers are actually cheaper to buy than the standard ones

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

I have an aero kit on mine and have done around 5k miles... there's a few small stone chips, but nothing that looks excessive tbh... being black they do show up and I could count them on both hands... I'm just planning to touch them in soon and maybe get it resprayed every few years... I know a friend with a 330ci sport complained about his bumper being peppered with stone chips after about 20k miles.

Chips & Cheese

I have 5000miles on the clock of DS MCS with Aero and after 2000miles complained to the dealer about the paintjob. Tech checked it out and had perfectly srong paint. Apparently it's designed for Aerodinamics only (funny that with its name) and therefore is not designed to deflect stones as much as the standard bumper.

They get so many owners of the M3 saying the same!

Yes, your right mate.... it was a mess on his car.

Seems that everything that hits it leaves a chip - which isn't the case with the regular bumper.

Why is it you always find these threads after you've made a mod?

Had my kit installed yesterday - still, looks a lot better

I think I'd go and see the dealer about this one. It's worth a shot after all.

My MCSW has the aero kit fitted and currently 12k on the clock with just over 2k going on since the start of January. So far it's got one tiny chip.

Had the aero kit fitted in September and done approx 5000 miles.

Front bumper looks like someone has taken a shotgun to it , don't think Mini runs help much .

I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and get it resprayed for the summer.

If anybody gets anywhere with a warranty claim do shout up

I've heard this from other people. The paint seems to be very thin of the kit.

Mine had less miles but I got a warranty replacement aero kit. It looked like I had did a season of WRC with it. THey looked at it at the dealership and replaced it. Go have it checked out.

You know, had another look at it today, and whilst theres a few obvious real stone chips, the rest of it looks likes its just flaking off. I rekon any kind of impact is making the paint chip...

So will talk to the dealership I think.

Cheers For your support, I'll keep you all informed.

Found this thread - I have the same problem with my aero kit -what gets me is why they dont tell you these things when you buy them. It may have made me think twice about buying the bumper if I'd have known how badly they chip.

Incidentally, how much do they cost to respray? This may be something that I look into periodically.

Going to complain to the dealership anyway to see what they have to say. I've done 1600miles and it looks absolutely awful already.

Its the spray shop that BMW contract out to, but not don't through BM. Still get the warrenty on the work though. Remember BM will take a % for organising that for you.
