What is the law on front licence plates in NY. is it legal to take it off?

NY state law requires a front plate.

Having said that I ran for about the first 2 years on my '02 MCS with no plate in western NY (Rochester area), but I eventually decided to install it.

Enforcement all depends upon the individual officer. I had one state police guy walk up to me while parked at a roadside stop and he clearly looked at the front bumper with no plate. When he got to the driver's window he was all smiles, saying how much he liked the car and how he was planning on getting one. Nothing said about no front plate. There are some drivers who have never installed the plate, but there are others who have been stopped, ticketed, and fined. It's all a matter of luck, but no front plate is illegal.

Having ordered an '05 MCS today, I'm trying to decide if I want to press my luck again.
