Australia Aero Kit in Melbourne?

Does anyone know of places in Melbourne where i can get a body kit for the 2005 MC Chilli below the factory price? I mean, $4300 for a factory installed body kit?!!! Does anyone know of any sources in Melbourne that will do it cheaper? Even aftermarket models such as Orciari, MS Design or Zeemax. I don't mind...just not 4K!

Do i sound like a cheap-o?!

Nope, $4300 is nuts for a body kit.

I got a mate who had a carzone kit sent from europe to aus... I think it was just over 3K delivered painted and fitted... still pretty expensive though.... and it does not look as good as the BMW aero kit.

Thanks for your congrats. By the way, when you say that $4,300 for a kit is nuts...do you know where i can get it cheaper?

I found some articles that have said that an aero kit fitted and painted costs around AUD$2,500.

I don't think the words Mini and cheap go in the same sentence together

You will be lucky to get anything under $3000 unless you know a painter, and get trade price for the kit.

I have heard of high $3000s being a good deal... although i do know someone who knows someone who knows someone who got it from the UK paided and fitted for <$3000 but they got free shipping... it is very expensive if you have to add shipping...

Good luck

Yep...and if it's the car I think you're talking about, that bodykit is hideous anyway....

Don't like your chances Dachanman....however....if you just bought aero side skirts and colour coded...that'd come in less than 2k....

The break-down for my kit was about

$600 each bumper
$400 each side skirt...
plus bits...

or $2200 for the whole kit (includes other essential stuff for fitting).....plus fitting and painting..

or you could just colour code - it looks quite good too....best quote I got in Sydney for that was $1200...

Thanks for your prompt reply! Can i just ask you whether you got kit in sydney? If so do you have the contact for the guys you got it through? Although i'm in Melb i'm just wondering whether they would be able to at least give me a contact in Melbourne that can do it for a similar price. Also, does your kit sit well on your car? Oh...and last question...what brand is your kit?

Many thanks for sharing your experience and info!

Aero kits look good - the only way is to get them done aftermarket.

I would play hard ball with the painter and get them to do your bonnet and front 1/4 trim while they are doing it - get it all color coated...

It is not a 'special' job - they just see the $$ signs when the MINI rocks up

The factory Aerokit (front, back and sideskirts) are prepped ready to go to paint... the side trims just need high fill, sanding and painting - hardly rocket science!

What do you mean? IT is available as a part number from BMW in Australia.

The Aero kit is available through your local panel beater - if you know the parts number, contact a panel beater and ask for them to order part # XXX XXX XXX and paint, then fit.

Im not sure of part numbers, but if you go the a BMW official Repairer they will know exactly.

My advice would be to go to BMW service, ask for a quote - including part numbers, then contact a panel beaters to paint and fit it.

He has picked up a fair few trophies now for his work and he has just had a photo shoot for the auto salon magazine.... I guess not to everybody's taste (mine included) but he really loves it and it is a very individual car..

.. plus those wheels are pretty nice.

I thought he had big chromies on it, but they are quite tasteful...

I can understand the sticker job, he has a very nice stereo, nice retrim (not my cuppa)...

Good luck to him, certainly showcases a different side of the mini ownership that few have been game to attempt.

On sunday at the GP I stood there (waiting for Tiaan actually) listening to peoples thoughts on the car - 95% were very positive... surely this is a good thing for the Mini community as a whole.

Good on ya Josh.

Mate, I just wote a MAMMOTH response for you, but then INTERNET EXPLORER CRASHED...

I ran around the house yelling at the furnature, and now I have calmed down....

I got the kit at BMW Pennant Hills in Sydney...They don't sell minis...,but I have seen some in there being serviced...

so when they see my car, they see a cheap car, compared to the other stuff they sell and work on.

I've been dealing directly with the parts guy, and the painting guy. the parts guy, lets me into his office, and I stand behind him while he searches for the parts I'm after on the BMW parts database software thingy...the aero kit came up at $2400, and he took $200 off....I'm sure there is fat in the prices and he wasn't doing me any HUGE favours..

I would say, if you called him, he'd tell you to talk to your local BMW or mini dealer, as there's not much he can do for you. Afterall...you guy will be looking at the same parts catalogue as he is....(computer based)...

The kit was overnight shipped from Melbourne and then I took it to the paint dude....explained what I wanted and he set his boys to work. They had the car for about a week. I was happy to pay extra for a quality job...and the M3 in the paintshop helped me with that confidence...

The $2200 was for an unpainted kit. The kit comes primed and ready to paint....the bits to line up with the arches are smooth (unlike the 'rippled' arches themselves) On top of normal painting and fitting, I had my arches smoothed and colour coded as well (the guy said they used something like 5 or 6 layers of high-fill primer to get it smooth)..came to $1800 including the painting of the aerokit itself....(not cheap! but when I hear that people pay 4500 and 5000 bucks for a normal aero kit fitted...I find it hard to believe...!)

The fit is ok...when the car was done, the dude showed me how the boys had a hard time aligning everything, as the front bar is one piece, not several like the MCS front bar...One of my problems at the moment, is that some of the clips aren't holding the front right arch in properly...so I have to get them replaced...I have to say, considering it's supposed to be a BMW part....it's not perfect.....

One other thing that bothers me is that the rear bar is sort of flimsy....I only found out the other day, that there is a bracket that needs to be fitted to make it strenghened....if you are getting the kit....you must read this thread:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...79#post1446079

Specifically, take note of this part number: 51 12 0 152 925

This part is not included in the aero kit normally....

If you wanted to go a cheaper option, colour coding the normal MCS/MC arches and skirts looks sweet...or you could just get the aero side skirts....they don't look out of place by themselves....go look in the exterior threads....every second post is about colour coding or aero kits...

Hope that's some help..if you want to know more....PM me...

All I can say, is it looks good...and I like it....and that's all you need to be trying to achieve....if it costs alot, looks strange and people don't like it...that's tough...the important thing is that YOU like it and am satisfied....

and I am!

That's new to me...in a good way.. Will doing it this way be cheap? I'm sorry to sound like a tight ass...but my budget is my no. 1 priority at the moment.

I can understand that - you are not being a tight **** - you are just looking after number 1's wallet.

It SHOULD be cheaper going this way, but I would exhaust all avenues...

Go to MINI and say - I want the BEST price - no shyte! See what they come back with.
(make sure you get itemised quote with part numbers)

Then go to the official repairer and see what they will do it for.

Even check out a few different BMW dealers. Do you have any mates who are spray painters?

It is not a technical job - any reasonable repairer can do it and do it well basically.

I got my back for $850 painted & fitted, I got quoted $700 plus paint & fit for the front and $1000 for side skirts paint & fit... I think I could easily get away with it under $3000.

(As long as they get a cooper back not a cooper S - like my back )

Im in Geelong though - prices are cheap here - less overheads *Melbourne Realestate *

Todd
