This is something i read in a review:

"And I found the test MINI had an on-again/off-again problem with the tailgate latching correctly. Half the time, the warning light would be illuminated on the speedometer, telling me the tailgate wasn't fully closed, and the interior dome light would stay on. "

Interesting. I frequently have to get out and re-slam the hatch to make the light go out. It seems like it shouldn't be necessary to manhandle the hatch so much just to get it securely latched. I recall that VW had a similar problem with the New Beetle.

I don't know whether there's a fix. I plan to bring it up with the dealer at the 10k mile service interval.
