Temp gauge help needed?

Need some help once again to determine if temp gauge is faulty or needs to be replaced. Engine seems fine and I don’ t think engine is over heating. Fan works fine. However, my needle is now half way between the center line and the 3/4 line when warmed up and viewed straight on. The manual calls for it to be at the centerline. I know if I call the MINI Help line they will tell me to take it to the dealer. If not really overheating they will not be able to give me any help unless I can be specific. Only my fellow MCS drivers can help right now. I would like to know where your temp needle rests when key is off? Unlike my fuel gauge which totally returns to the bottom of the cowl (almost disappears) and appears to rest on the edge my temp gauge needle seems to hang up at the bottom and never really returns to the cowl edge as the fuel gauge. What I really need is to have some of my fellow drivers compare their fuel gauge and their temp. gauge needle at rest when key is off. Are they both the same or does the temp needle appear to hang up above the cowl??
My dash (10 hr.labor) has already been removed along with the anti-freeze and A/C gas to install a burn out A/C-heater blower motor. Do any of you know if the entire dash has to come out to replace the temp. gauge if necessary??

I don't have an S but I think it would be the same as the normal Cooper..as in the temp and fuel gauge needle should both drop down so you can't see them when the key isn't in the ignition. Hope this helps.

I believe R1 had a similar sort of problem..it was caused by the plug on the sender not being pushed home properly.

Sorry if any of this information is incorrect...feel free to correct me anyone.

I've just written this post in word to open up a new thread, went to copy it accross and what do i find someone with the same problem. i'll add mine as well and hopfully get some more feed-back. thanks

Got a little problem and I need a little bit of help,
Nothing major (I hope) it’s a visual thing.
To the problem. My temp gauge has started to read a bit higher than normal. Normal been dead on half when fully warmed up.
The Gauge now reads between the half mark and the three quarter mark, two-thirds gauge. I’m pretty certain the cars not overheating and it’s a gauge or sender problem.
What I want to know from someone out there is, when you have the ignition switched off, where is the needle on your temp gauge. On mine with the ignition switched off the temp gauge needle is sitting on the first little light block at the bottom of the gauge. For a comparison the fuel gauge needle is right down, nearly below the bottom rim of the clock, I think the temp gauge should be the same but can’t remember. Could some please have a look and let me know, I’d really appreciate it.
I’m not going to get a look at another MINI to compare it till the weekend, and the problem is starting to bug me. As I said I’m certain the car is not overheating so there’s no panic, I just want my mind putting at ease till I can get the car booked in to be looked at.

p.s any info on this block thing for the last post ????
were do i look for it under the bonnet ???

Thanks

Also get them to do a diagnostic check and to test the sender.

My MCS temp guage sits right at the bottom (disappears) when the key is off, and reads one needle's width lower than exact centre mark when it's warmed up.

I have another question. The car warms up very quickly, like in under 2 minutes to operating temperature. It then takes a very, very long time to cool down again. I.E. on our road-trip, if we stoped for a dinner and a movie off the highway (3-4 hours) and got back in the car, the needle had only cooled down a few more needle's widths.

I know a cast iron block hangs onto the heat... But then shouldn't it also take a little while to heat up as well? I've never owned a car with this trait.

I don't have an S but only regular Cooper. Yes my car warms up very quickly (especially recently because of the heat wave in Toronto) and takes a very long time to cool down. I would say after a few hours, I still feel the heat from the bonnet (not opened) when I walk near it and needle doesn't go down a lot.

One thing I feel strange is whenever I first start my car in the morning after leaving it overnite inside the garage, the rev fluctuates between 1K & 1.5K a few times for about 10 secs (maybe less sometimes) before it settles down to about 1.2K (it settles at about 0.9K after it warms up).

Does anyone of you know why?

Cheers

Thank You.

That’s put my mind to rest.
Now to get the bloody thing booked in and sorted, I’ll get the squeeky seat looked at as well, been putting that off for a few weeks now, seemed a bit silly putting it in for just that.
Noahe, most modern engine's heat up really quick now-days
I wouldn’t worry about that, mine heats up just as quick and for a comparison my Mum & sister's little Nissan Micra's heat up just as quick. As to holding the heat to be honest I had'ent noticed. Something else to look out for on my next trip
