Main Beam problems

Hi, I have recently purchased a 52 plate cooper s, lots of extras and seems in perfect condition.

Yesterday driving home i got an intermittent fault with the main beam, the main beam works but would not stay on automatically. Pulling the stalk back (for main beam) lit the lights but letting it go would just go back to normal. It was as if the relay was not latching on. Later on the problem did not re appear but has since!

Anyone have any ideas? Does it mean a good old trip to the dealer? I bought this car private and i think the warranty has not long run out. It has only 18,000miles on the clock. How do i stand to getting it sorted by BMW outside the warranty?

Another problem Ive noticed, it seemed abit jerky on pick up but i didn't really think much of it. Yesterday, first thing in the morning it did it with a concern from me, soon cleared but obviously not good. Any ideas??

Any help would be great, Matt

Hey Matt

I had a simialar problem where the lights would not come on at all!. I got the problem fixed just via a software upgrade they did on my car, it was covered under warranty. But I reckon if you just turn up and ask them to have a quick look at it they may just fix it for you.

Not sure about the jerky pick up.

[quote=trish]Hi

I have have my car just over three years from new, November 2002. About eight weeks this problem started with the offside light not working, got someone at work to change the bulb but he said he did not think that was the fault as the bulb seem fine. A few days later, someone said lights didn't seem right when I flashed them, then a few days later went again. As just out of warranty took to Electrical guy he said he had fixed it, three days later, same again. On the return he got it working gave me my money back and said he could not get it to fault again but it was not fixed. Took it too the BMW dealer, who said he would have liked to see it not working. He took my spare bulb and said he would get back to me. Now two weeks later, gone again and BMW dealer never got back to me. Got the guys at work to look at it, they changed the bulbs over and it is now working. This is really doing my head in. Did you manage to fix your problem and do I have to go back to the useless BMW dealer. Are they the only ones with the software upgrade. The BMW dealer told me it would not be covered by the warranty, is this wrong if it is a fault. Can you help as no one seems able to.

Trish

I went to the BMW dealer and as the problem wasnt there he couldnt really pin point it!! To be honest fair enough. He said to him it seems like a switch or contact on the main beam stalk. Not software. He said carry on and if it comes again then come back. It hasnt happened now for a week or so, touch wood!!!! He did say mini's were known for small electrical faults!!!!!

My fault that was the main beam just wouldnt latch on, as far as i know all my light are working correctly. LEt me know if you find anymore out!!!
