Xenon Flickering

Hi everyone- i've just bought a 2004 Cooper S and I have noticed that my passenger side xenon headlight is flickering- What is the likely problem? Is it a loose bulb or something-Can i fix it? Really appreciate your advice! Thanks, Mick

Is it flickering as in up or down on the road?
Or flickering on and off?

Hi MickCooperS,
I've a 04 S and had the exact same problem in sept 05, Lights would intermittently flicker on and off and would have to switch off the lights and then back on.

Problem was the Xenon Bulbs had a cracked Ceramic insulation which was arking (25K Volts ) I had the problem on Both Lights and I Asked the dealer to replace both bulbs and the ballast units- problem sorted

I think it was due to 1 of two things causing the problem
1. Sloppy installation of the bulbs at the factory
2. The Headlights are located on the bonnet and when you open and close the bonnet the force of the lights slamming down cause the cracking on the terminals)

I assume if you've only bought (second hand) the car it's going to have at least 1 year warranty? Bring it back and kick up.

Yeah I agree with sharkie-That or the wire behind it has come out as it only just pops in the Xenon starter .

Well, car went in yesterday- they are replacing the whole xenon unit under warranty (part ordered)- i don't really no much more than this- sounds ok to me though! At least it will be sorted. I just hope i won't have two different coloured lights now though!....got new tyres put on car (standrad pirelli tyre) and on way home the run flat warning light came on- i assume it needed resetting and pressed the button under handbrake? Is this right?

You should really check the tyre pressures before resetting the warning lamp.Otherwise all you are doing is running the car with potentially uneven tyre pressures or maybe even a flat tyre. Which is a little risky

Hey Goonery, took your advice and took note of tyre pressures- turns out my rear passenger tyre (brand new!) is losing air....I can't believe it- brand new tyre punctured in under 10minutes!!!!!!!! I'm ringing BMW tomorrow- i don't believe that in under an 1/8 mile i punctured a tyre- hoping they will replace it- must have been damaged putting on the car or something....
