fogging up - fixed!

does anyone else have a car that fogs up?

I can drive my car no matter what time of day, or what the whether for about 10-15 minutes, and i can't see out front or sides. the only way i can see out is to always us my air conditioner.

Bearing in mind this: http://www.mini2.com/forum/faults-fixes/77266-growling-air-conditioner.html I reckon the gods hate me

the first time i reported this they replaced the expansion tank, which seemed to help for a while. They've replaced a couple more since, but it is still fogging up. I know lots of people have had bottles replaced, but does it cause this?

so anyway, Bet you can't guess what they tried to tell me this morning? - "they all do it - probably can't be fixed"

Here we go again.

When I used to use the aircon to demist (as I was informed, and rightly so, this was quicker) it seemed to set a president that from that point onwards if I DIDN'T use aircon it would steam up and not demist well at all!

The only way I stopped this viscious cycle was to was the car inside and out (including all glass) and STOP using the aircon to demist.

you do get into a cylce with air con like paul describes. once you've used it to dry the air in the car, next time you put the fan on without air con it fills up with (relatively) damp air & mists up. try either running on full heat & full blower for a few minutes or leaving the windows/doors open for 10-15 mins to allow the air inside to return to the same humidity as outside.

they definately don't all do it & it could be you have a bad system or the car interior could be damp somewhere - have you checked all your carpets to see if they are damp?

Might be why my major clean cured it as I had doors etc. all open while working on the car.

Which means I could have just opened it up and had a cup of tea, and saved all that hard work?!

yup

although once they have steamed up a few times the windows will be dirty/streaky so its worth cleaning them, plus i'm not entirely sure if this holds water scientifically but dirty windows seem to fog up more readily than clean ones.

you may be onto something. I've checked all the carpets etc, and there's no damp. I would say that every time its ever fogged up its been after I use the ac, then switch it off. I wonder if i cleaned all the glass properly then drove it without first using the AC would it fog up? (I use the a/c on vent too, not demist)

Are you using the air recirculation button? Even if you aren't the air recirc mechansim could be stuck in the closed position and causing the condensation problems.

I don't find the cycle too difficult to break out of... wait for dry weather, give the fan a blast with a window open.

On a typical mild wet Glasgow day, when you're in and out of the car in wet clothes, the aircon is a godsend. It means you can have it on 1 and not be misted up, whereas normally it would be at 4 and you couldn't talk to your passengers.

The handbook tells you about the misting up issue...

well bugger me. they fixed something. after first telling me they all do it (as i expected ) they went through my car and fixed a whole raft of bugs. among other things there was a grommet misplaced in the firewall, which was the casue of the car sounding "airy" they fixed the gromet and now it doesn't fog up anymore. it must have been getitng warm (and presumedly damp) air from the engine bay. sounds amazing, but there you go.
