engine warning light!

Hi all!

Has anybody experienced the engine warning light illuminating.

Have been informed that it is caused from the gas cap not being on tight .
Causes a vacuum leak since the whole system is pressurized.

Had it checked out and light was reset but eventually came on again. Dealer says it may be a faulty seal on the gas cap according to the computer test.

Any other info. or simlilar experiences from others would be appreciated.

800 kms on MCS.

The EML light is supposed to come on when the emmission levels are beyond certain limits. That might be due to something really serious; much more likely it's down to a duff sensor, small leak or other minor gremlin. If the computer says it's a duff seal, chances are it's a duff seal.

Ordered my "S" August '01. Arrived July '02. EB with white roof, wheels and stripes, Chili pack, DSC and climate control. Hate those 17" runflats though.

Can now be seen all over the West Midlands, as a blue blur passing everything at speed

Second rule in fixing cars: When in doubt as to which part is bad, start by replacing the cheapest one.

First rule is:
Working on a car while drunk with your friends only makes things worse.

Its not the EML light that comes on. Its the light above that thats shaped like a mini engine. No pun intended.

My Mini One bought in July has stopped already six times with ignited lights "EML" and "Engine". According to Mini Spain, the problem is "lack of acceleration". Today it is in the garage. I will already tell you what happens...

Could be, I know I was warned by the dealer that not putting the gas cap back on quite right was a common cause of the light going on, so a leaky seal would seem like a plausible explanation. In addition my parents' Datsun failed its smog check a couple of years ago and the mechanic simply replaced the gas cap and it passed.

I had this intermittent problem. When I took the car in, the diagnostics showed a CVT error (gear ratio adjuster). Almost four weeks later, I still do not have my car back. In fact, they now can not even start the engine, even though I drove the car in to the dealer. If the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on, have the dealer check it out. My service adviser thought it was a gas cap problem too. He was wrong.

Mine still it is in the garage. They have tried to clear importance and they wanted to give back to me the car tomorrow. Finally they have left me a Volvo S40 of courtesy and at least this weekend I will have a car of which I can trust...
Maybe they will do something with the problem, but personally I don't think so. I'm looking for other options. i like the VW Lupo GTI. What do you think?

There are many, many reasons why the check engine light could come on. The EML light should only come on when there is a problem w/ the electronic throttle system. A loose gas cap or faulty seal on the cap could cause the CE light to come on, but they are not the only reasons.

Well it came on at 800 kms and now I have over 4500. EL is still on. Seems to be no inherant problems except for that annoying little light,

Thumbs up

They have taken more than one week but finally I return to have my One and seems that it works well. They have replaced the tube strangler?! (ref: 13547509043). I hope not to return to see ignited the lights "EML" and "Engine" never again...

i'm not sure what the lights are called in other countries, but in the united states it's the "service engine" and "eml" light. i've had them fixed 3 times in 2 months. stalled on street once and on the freeway once. first thing they changed was the electronic throttle controller. got my mini back, a few days past and the lights came on again. then they changed the main computer. took them 3 weeks to order one. went to the dealership to get my mini but before i even drove out of the dealership the lights came on again. later they said it was a faulty electronic throttle controller again. just got it back for a few days and it seems fine now(cross my fingers). i don't think there's anything to do with the gas cap.

Unhappy

Exactly the same part replaced in my One two weeks ago: the throttle controller. Eight days waiting for the part to come from Germany. I live in Barcelona, not so far I think. Cross my fingers too, my Mini stops working every time the EML light turns on...

When the EML light came on my MCS wouldn't rev above 2000. I think that's called limp-home mode. The light went out after 6-7 restarts and has stayed off. To verify info about the gas cap, I started the car with the cap completely off and no warning light of any kind came on. My service rep told me on the phone that it's probably the throttle controller unit. The car was also running rough and sputtering when the EML light came on.

When the "Service Engine Soon" light came on, nothing seemed to be affected. This light went out about an hour later but came back 2 weeks after the first incident so I need to take the car in, again. This make the fourth time that the car is being "serviced" and I have 2,040 miles on it

you're beating me by having your mini serviced 4 times. i've had mine serviced 3 times and my mileage is around 2100 now. with being serviced 4 times for the same problem, i'd ask for a replacement or a full refund of the car. the car is just not "acceptable" when it has to be serviced so many time with so little miles on it. you can read the thread "replacing a lemon" on this site regarding how to go about asking for a replacement or refund if you do consider it. some of the mini owners here have done that.

Mailewan,

Thanks for the tip. to be fair, each time the car was serviced, it was for a different problem so i don't know if it is a Lemon in legal terms. Despite the problems, I really do love this car so i'm trying to make the best of it. But, if I have to take it in again after this, I'll seriously consider taking some action. My 1974 Jaguar has fewer problems!
