If the cooper was purchased from a mini dealer then u should have 1 yr warranty.

Had the same problem with mine and turned out the something was broken inside which caused the seat to jam.

could be the cable, push the seat rite forward on the slide front handle, then get ur head down in the rear footwell, pull the lower trim/material upwards, there is a cable that runs from the handle u speak off to the handle on the other side of the chair, ive had this pop out before.

I also have a 51 Mini one which the pass seat doesnt slide forward when you push it down to let someone in the back.
It also got jammed once and i couldt get it back up so i went to my local garage and after about half hour the said the temperarily put it back but i need to replace the stuff inside for £270.
I said thanks but no, and left and my pass seat has worked since (without the slide though)

I had the same problem. Did exactly what Benham_Monkey suggested and voila, all is well.
