Offline | Transmission noise on 03 MC I've got this scraping noise at idle and some ticking/scraping sound (light) when accelerating and decelerating - some mechanic sounding whine in high gears.. New clutch (number 2) about a year ago.. Could this be clutch again - eg. bearing (would be covered under warranty) or could it be more - like the infamous midland gearbox alltogether? Any danger of continued usage now that the noise is here? |

Offline | Check for fluid leaks under the front of the car (like after it's parked overnight). If the sound is like plastic trim scraping against the tires or small rocks being shaken in a plastic box... that's the sound my Midlands box made both times it failed. I only drove it to its death the first time. I was cruising down the highway with the cruise control set and started slowing down - I had lost fifth gear (and most of reverse too, it turns out). I still had the other forward gears though, so I was able to get off the highway and to a safe place to wait for the tow truck. Anyway, check for leaks - if there is one, I'd recommend getting a flatbed ride to the nearest dealer - not driving it around any more. |

Offline | The gearbox chap who refurbed my gearbox said that 5th is the first gear to go on a failing box when the oil goes, and this is illustrated by the failure you had. Gerry MINI Cooper, Chili Pack, Xenons, heated washers, MFSW, ASC+T, |

Offline | Thanks for the replies - no leaks under car in my garage. But the noise is getting louder. It 's now becoming a very audible ticking - the ticking frequency is higher in high gears (5th is almost like a whine/very rapid ticking). It's probably gonna blow soon (this weekend, who knows).. |

Offline | it sounds like the input shaft main bearing has gone which is what hapened to mine. - if you dip the clutch, does the noise stop? If it is the bearing, then you could get the 'box refurbed if you are out of warranty, and the sooner it is done, the better as you won't damage the 'box further - if you keep on running it indefinately, i guess it will eventually go in a big way and be a fair bit more expensive to repair. - pity you are not in Glasgow or i would have put you in touch with a good pair of hands Gerry MINI Cooper, Chili Pack, Xenons, heated washers, MFSW, ASC+T, |

Offline | alternatively it could be a damaged differential tooth or a tooth on the input shaft, however the ticking would only be present on either the gas or over run as it would be unlikely to damage both sides of the gear face unless you had done something very stupid recently, which i guess you would have noticed doing... therefore the thinking on the bearing above, Gerry MINI Cooper, Chili Pack, Xenons, heated washers, MFSW, ASC+T, |

Offline | Went to the dealer at lunch to have a technician listen to it and according to him it's definately the gearbox (midland) and, while at it, the clutch should be replaced as well. So I have to bring MC in on Monday and talk to the BMW inspector to see if they will take part of the cost as warranty (the car is out of warranty since January this year - the clutch is still under warranty as it was replaced a year ago). Can anyone give me some advice on how to tackle this with the 'inspector' ? Situation is as follows: Feb 2005 - new clutch as it was juddering (warranty) 2 months later it's juddering again (nothing done) May 2006 - will need new gearbox and clutch |

Offline | Brought in the car this morning and dealer called BMW inspector, all will be done covered by BMW waranty - new clutch, new gearbox - excellent news. My warranty expired 4 months ago so I'm really pleased with the outcome. I can now rest assured for another 2 years (gearbox/clutch waranty wise) - let's hope they did a good and thorough job and that it won't break or judder again. |
