Offline | Knocking noise coming from rear? Hello all, Just a quick one. Ive got 2 knocking noises coming from the rear of my mini cooper when i either go up onto my driveway/curb/any type of gradient etc.... or i can also replicate the noise very well when i do a small slalom. The car is only a month old so im sure its nothing like wheel bearings/cv joints etc....wel, at least i hope its nothing like that anyways. And before anyone says it no its not the seat belts hitting the rear pillars! ![]() |

Offline | Me too. Had my Mini a month now. I only get one knock (every now and then) and thats when I apply the brakes. It sounds like it is coming from the back. BMW reckon its a loose bit that would hold a spare wheel. I've also got a noisy clutch. When I take my foot off the clutch pedal, right on biting point, it makes a slight noise. BMW will probably have an excuse for that one as well. ![]() |

| 05 MCS BEP | Could be those two rubber balls hanging off the end of the strings that pull the boot cover up when the hatch is open? They just hang down when your hatch is closed so swing freely in an empty boot. They are long enough to hit the sides and the hatch. 05MCS BEP - Alta 22mm rear anti-swaybar, Madness CAI, (15% pulley soon to be installed) |

Offline | Knocking Noise May not be the same noise, but the rattling I had in that area turned out to be thr rear hatch ("Boot") lid latch. I wrapped a bit of Duct Tape around the middle part of the staple-shaped part on the boot lid & the problem has been gone for almost a year now. It's worth a try - it's cheap & easy! Offline | I had the same thing on my 05 cooper and it ended up being the lower control arm on the rear driver side. The bushing was not installed right at the factory and it cracked. The noise I heard and you maybe hearing is metal on metal. The noise will get worse. All covered under warranty, they replace the whole control arm because it's just easier. I recorded the sound let me know if you want me to post it. |

Offline | sorry my cell phone won't let me download it onto my computer. If you open up the hatch and push up and down on the car you will here a cowbell type of noise. That's the noise |

Offline | Another possibility is the trailing arm bushing. Another thread from 2003 had this occur from backing into a curb and displacing the bushing in its holder (the console in one source). I have the same problem of a displaced bushing but have a question about the replacement procedure. The repair manual calls for removing the trailing arm to get at the bushing. Looking at the bushing mount from under the car, it looks possible to remove just the bushing holder at the top. Several members have replaced the bushing but did not describe the process they used. Can it be done without removing the trailing arm? |
