Passenger Window wont open???

Hi,

I dont really post on here so forgive me if this topic has been covered many times before or Im posting it in the wrong forum etc.

I was Just on my lunch break about an hour ago. Driving back to the office and tried to open my passenger side window using the switch on the dash as usual- but it didnt budge??? The windows just stuck ( in the closed position - thankfully) .

I own an out-of-warranty 2002 (02) mini one, salt pack, with 66k on the clock.

I have no idea what the problem could be. Any info relating to this problem or the best way to deal with it/ fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is it very hot? The outside temperature that is, not the window.

this happened to me here in UK on our hottest day. Once it cooled down (after driving a few miles) it opened again. Has never happened since.

I guess it is just a very tight fit and the expanding metalwork was holding it closed against the motor.

It's not hot at all to be perfectly honest. in fact it's the coolest it's been for about 2 months here in staffordshire. I might go to the stealership to see whats up with it and how much it may cost to fix.

My driver's window stuck when it was very hot here a couple of weeks ago. Of course when I took the car into the dealer to be looked at it was early in the morning and cool and it worked perfectly And it's been fine ever since - but then the weather's been cool too.

It aint never going to get cool around here guys, and my window has been shut for a month. It's really strange that you can just park a car and the window dont work, that is not an indication of a burnt out motor, when you flick the switch on the dash you can hear the solonoid in the door clicking but there's no joy, maybe i'll try pouring ice water over the car at 5.30 am and give it a try, lol.Peter

it may be the motor... apparently if just one tinypart of the motor goes the solenoid will still click on and off? mine did this....the stealership quoted £350 for a new motor and when i went to pick it up it cost £35. apparently they can just get hot and sticky!

This is a well known problem on these cars. So much so that if BMW were righteous about it, they'd do a re-call. I've had both the window motors replaced on my 03 Mini and they're starting to act up again. It starts out with the solenoid clicking and windows not dropping when the door is opened and gradually progresses to total failure. Problem is, my Mini will probably be out of warranty when they go out completely and unless they can duplicate the problem. no fix under warranty

Thanks William for the imput, guess the door panel is going to come off, that's why i bought a workshop manual,so hopefully the fix will be the cost of a new motor.Around here we say BMW stands for (bring money withyou).

Minis are so expensive. Im getting sick of shelling out so much money for my car.

Im going to buy a golf!

last time that happened to me, it costed me big bucks, as my motor was gone.

and about a yr later, the drivers side crapped itself and costed me more big bucks.

Nos-ing it all the way home...

Just got off the phone with Knights Bmw parts department; the guy told me that 9 out of 10 times the problem is with the Motor and the other times its the Regulator.

a Motor costs £60.50 inc V.AT and the Regulator costs £76.00 inc V.A.T

I've decided to get it fixed in a couple of weeks by the body shop who are fixing a scratch I've got on the drivers side wing.

Still ****ed off

60:50 (Sorry, don't have a pound sign) At the current rate of exchange that works out to about $121 Beats the heck out of the $500 the dealer charges to fix it. Gotta get one of those manuals !!!!!!!

I have this problem with both windows from time to time. It seams related to heat since it only happens to me in the summer (Dallas summer). Very common problem. Anyway, I read this fix on some other forum (luckily, before I spent any $$$ on a fix), and it always works for me.
Dont laugh now... take your fist and pound on the door (the one with the stuck window) just above the speaker fairly hard. Now try the window.
Good luck, it has not failed me yet.

I can vouch for this, it does work. Its happened to my drivers window about 7 or 8 times so far and a couple of thumps on the door panel sorts it out. I guess it will eventually fail completely but I figure I might as well get as much life out of it as possible. Mine doesn't seem to be related to outside temperature though.....

My passennger window does this occaisonally, especially after sitting out on a hot day, or after it rains. It clicks but no action. I haven't whacked mine yet (but have been tempted), though if you hold the switch up for 10-20 sec sometimes that will work.
