Sump Bung problems on 2001 cooper over 80K miles

Anybody had a problem with the thread wearing on the sump bung after 80K miles?

I have one of the first Cooper's and it was serviced yesterday for the 6th time and I get a call from the garage to say that the thread is broken due to wear!

The question is how can a thread wear when it it has been only undone 6 times? If its due to vibrations then surely its a manufacturing fault or poor design.

The garage says this is a common fault with BMW's in general since the sump is cast in aluminium and not steel. They are also saying it is not classed as a latent defect . I suspect a dodgy mechanic because I have never known a sump bung thread to wear ever.

I look forward to your comments.

Regards

Andy

Sounds as though the mechanic has overtightened/ stripped the thread, i had this on a motorbike and had to have the sump removed, hole re-threaded/ larger plug fitted

unusual as the main dealers suck the oil out of the dipstick and do not remove the sump plug!

The first screw in contact and mating with the block was incorrect at the first place as a result will cause damage to the threads.

Sounds to me the thread has been damaged at the last oil change, probably cross threaded, your best bet is simply to get a new sump, I doubt they cost that much and more reasuring than having the existing sump re-threaded.

I doubt very much that is true as why bother having a drain plug at all. I have an aftermarket sump plug with an oil temp sender attached and have to make sure the dealer fits a new copper sealing ring at each oil change. Maybe some dealers do suck the oil out but mine doesn't, I would have thought it's better to let gravity drain the oil down rather than trying to force it up.

was replaced on my MCS under warranty the last time it went in for other work. The dealer pointed out it was weeping and needed changing so did it. 20k miles btw.

i had my oil changed 2 weeks ago and the mechanic (independant BMW) removed the sump plug, let the oil drain, removed the filter (at which point lots more oil came out of the sump), replaced the filter, put the sump plug back in and filled with new oil

I've heard some dealers use a drain through the dipstick tube to suck the oil out but surely it can't get all the crap out of the bottom of the sump that way? i'd prefer to see them do it the old fashioned way through the sump plug
