Offline | Clutch rattle So my car has developed this! Looked at the forums and then booked it into the dealership. 1st visit. Well it needs a new clutch and thrust bearing. Get a call, its ready to pick up no more noise. Couple of days later the noise is back. 2nd visit. News a new flywheel, have to wait for BMW approval. Booked 2 weeks later. Pick it up yesterday. The ******* is still making the noise. How the hell can they say its fixed when its not. Went back in and told service manager, who then came out sat in the car. Agreed the noise had not gone. Well we are going to have to wait for the BMW service manager who visits every 8 weeks to look at it. It prob needs a new gearbox. But after reading on the forums, I have heard that even this does not sometimes cure it!!!! Does anyone know what the problem is, and if I am to get it back and it is still rattling, can I ask for another car? I brought it 2nd hand under the cherished option, its a July 04 with 17k on the clock. Man I wish I kept mu Focus ST170, 2 years of no rattles squeeks! BMW have a lot to live upto. |

Offline | The Getrag box isn't the quietest in this world, theyre all noisy some more than others. Mine is on my S is when idling, always has done since new 3 years and doesn't seem to get any worse. Wouldn't worry about it and enjoy your MINI, if you do a search there's plenty on this subject on MINI2 |

Offline | My 04.04 MCS has just started doing this too. Only when cold though. There is a very slight rattle that you don't really notice has stopped until it has stopped, if that makes sense. Depressing the clutch pedal momentarily causes the rattle to cease??? ![]() |

Offline | Nah it should not rattle. My old ST170 shares the same gearbox, and was as silent as anything. It sounds really bad first thing in the morning, and even at the lights you can hear it in neutral. Its a noise which has developed, so IMO and the fact BMW know of this issue should sort it period. Whos to say that something serious may break after the warranty expires then I may get shafted with a huge repair bill. |

| MINI2 Senior | From what I have read on here in the past it is pinion clatter and is a known isue and doesn't effect your car in the slightest. You may have had all those parts replaced for nothing. Had it on my 04' Cooper S and have it (though not as loud and only when cold) on my 05' Cooper S too. I believe the explanation was posted by Roland2003 of GTT, might be worth doing an Advanced search for posts made by him. |

Offline | But I've read that there is a new and upgraded flywheel which cures the rattle in neutral...? Read under the "gearbox-rattle"-topic, and the part-and bulletin number will be there.. I've just delivered mine back to service, and they will order the new flywheel for me ![]() |

Offline | Is a July '04 the Getrag 'box? I don't remember when the switch happened... We had a similar problem, but only when warm. The car chattered when the pedal was depressed, regardless of gear, but it shut right up when a gear was engaged. The dealer put in a new clutch last week, and that seems to have fixed it... -Eric |

Offline | There is probably not a definite fix to this problem. I have done following: - 2 new clutches - One new gearbox - One new flywheel The rattle stops for a few days or weeks, and then returns. I am really sick and tired of delivering my car to the dealer to no avail. Almost feel sorry for the dealer who has tried everything to help me. I am considering two options right now; keeping my car without caring about the rattle or buying a BMW 1-series.. |
