Tapping noise

hey guys,

ive noticed recently that my 02 cooper s is making a tapping noise at low speeds. I'm not sure if its the brakes, but it goes away when i accelerate and when i touch the brake pedal. It seems particularly bad below 2000rpm.

I had some new rear disks and pads put on about 700 miles a go and haven't done any harsh breaking so im sure they should be ok.

Any ideas?

thought id give an update!

Just given BMW a call, and they want to charge me £57 just for looking at it.

Probably just going to ignore it for now, and see if it goes away

hoping its got something to do with the cooler weather!

when you say tapping? can you give a slightly better description. Dull knock or metallic tap. Front/Rear or side of the car. I'll try and help.

its a tapping sound from the nearside at the rear. i have a slightly heavier than normal clutch at the moment as well. Dont really want to be spending a fortune letting BMW tell me there is nothing wrong

Sorry to hijack your thread a bit! I have a knock/ tap noise that i hear when i move off and again when I slow down, its not a major problem but can be really annoying in traffic! Last time I brought my car into BMW for service I asked them to look at it so machanic came out and went for test drive with me so i could point it out- he could hear it and was a bit puzzled- I collected my car later that day and the explanation was- "they all have it"! Anyone any ideas?

What rims are you running? I know with the original web spokes people had a problem with tapping noises. Perhaps something similar is happening to you?

to be honest im not worrying about it to much now,

im not paying bmw my hard earned dosh to tell me its normal. The car has done 53,000 miles and other than that has no other problems apart from a few rattles, and a little squeak on the seats when i set off in first. So im quite happy for now (touch wood!)

im considering an aero kit actually, but i got those 16 inch white alloys, and im worried it might not look right. May need S Spokes, any ideas?

Wait until the car is cold. Kneel down and grab the left hand exhaust silencer box and give it a shake. If it moves a lot and knocks then the brackett that supports it is corroded and broken.

On the aero kit issue, It will look ok but as you say upgfrading your wheels would complement it. If you can stretch to it the original split rims look the best with the aero kit especially if you have the wheel arches colour coded.

The knocking when pulling away and stopping could be the brake pads moving slightly in thier carrier. If they have bee in a long time the locating luggs on the end of the pads can wear a little and that tiny move ment can cause the knock or tapp you are describing.

jus thought id give you all an update

i had my wheel off today, to have a look at the discs and pads. My girlfriend's dad is really good with cars, and he managed to loosen the callipers or something, not quite sure what he did, but the noise has gone, and my mini breaks like a dream.

happy now
