PDC problem - corroded covers

Hi everyone - my 2002 MCS has factory fitted PDC and works like a dream.

However, recently, the sensor has been kicking in as soon as you put it in reverse - regardless of whether there was anything behind me or not.

I cleaned all around the area to make sure nothing was stuck on the sensors - but it all seemed clean. The I noticed that 2 of the sensor covers were corroded. they were blistered and had started to bubble, just like rust on old bodywork.

The car was in for it's service today, and I asked them to take a look, and they confirmed that it was corrosion problem. No problem I thought as BMW have a great anti-corrosion warranty on their vehicles. Alas I was wrong.

Apparently, BMW consider these little painted sensor covers as 'trim' and not bodywork and as such they are not covered by any kind of anti-corrosion warranty.

So, they need to order the parts as they need to be paint matched at the factory, and to get the 2 of them replaced will cost around £180.

Has anyone else had problems with these PDC sensor covers corroding, and did your dealer charge you for the replacement parts?

Thanks in advance.
Garry

Not had problems, but if its under warranty I'd be wanting it done FOC

If its out of warranty then yes there are plastics and not metal work, so therefore not covered would be my guess

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

bummer.

I might buy a dog and have it live on the rear parcel shelf and teach it to yelp when I reverse too close to something...it's got to be cheaper..!!

Thanks for your feedback.

As usual, any reason not to pay out! I believe they should cost about £55 each plus fitting, but you shouldn't be paying if the car is still under warranty!

I've got exactly the same problem on my 2002 BMW Compact which has a BMW approved used warranty.

At first it was just bubbling through on the PDC sensors, so I took it to the dealer but they contacted BMW who said they would not replace them unless they were faulty, but now I get random beeping when I put in in reverse.

It's got much worse this week so as soon as I get chance I'll be back to get them sorted.

Our PDC sensors are faulty - it's not just a corrosion issue.

To be honest I'm tempted to just trade my car in for a brand new Cooper S and not mention it to them!

Go back and demand they get them sorted if it's still under warranty, if not I'm sure it can't be too hard to clean up and repaint them or order some new ones and fit them yourself!

I was told by the dealer that you can't repaint the sensors, but my mate who used to work in a BMW bodyshop in Viena reckons that you should be able to clean up and repaint the sensors yourself - I'm sure a thin layer of touch up pen may do the job, but you've got nothing to lose IMO - just depends how hard the bumper is to remove.

Good luck and let us know how you get on - I may go to the dealer tomorrow.
