Cracked Windshield

Went down to the garage yesterday morning and found a crack in the windshield that I hadn't seen before. It was a relatively cold night for California with a low of 26F and the crack is on the inside of the screen and looks to have started up in the frame and moved down. No sign of rock hit or other impact on the outside. Totally baffled. Has anyone else run into this problem and given the lack of flying rock or bat to windshield it seems that the warranty might take care of this for me? Any thoughts?

Cheers

Annoying I know. The chances are it is from an impact though, rather than anything else.... and that you simply do not recall the event. The mini screen by its nature, sits more upright than most other modern cars and to a fair degree therefore, tends to receive more force from a projectile!

I'm of the opinion that a windscreen/shield is weaker at the edge of the glass, so it follows that the further away an impact is from the center area, the more likely it will result in a crack.

On one of my mini screens, I took a stone, obviously pinged if you like, from another car, round about where my head would be. Examined the car that night, "phew, got away with that". Second day no problem...it was only the third day after, a crack appeared. So it just goes to show, the result can sometimes be far removed from the event, along with sudden changes in temp etc etc,

Thanks for the tip, it appears that this cracked windshield issue is more common than I ever would have expected. Oh well, time to call the dreaded service manager.

I had the same problem, going around the m25 to heathrow, went to pick up my mate from the terminal and the front windowscreen was fine, come back and a massive 5cm crack appears from the far right edge, as said above by kezman50 as its so upright its weaker and the closer the impact to the edge the less the chance it can be fixed, i have had a new window from autoglass on my insurance and its never been the same, i find you can really hear the windnoise now like having a windo open all the time, then again i only had the car with the old window for 4 days could only happen to a brand new car

its pretty wild having the widow crack the way it does. my crack is on the inside of the car (tracked it with a ball point pen) and seems grows every morning the temp falls below freezing. I am crossing my fingers for some sun.
