Hey everybody,
I was just wondering if any of you have ever had your engine making a tapping noise when it is cold? My ONE only does it sometimes and it usually goes after a max of 5 minutes. I thought it might be the tappets but from my understanding the noise should only last a few seconds. BMW have had it back twice. The first time they said they couldn't find anything wrong and the second time they said the oil was a bit low but the noise is still there.

I have booked it in with them again but I wanted to know if this was related to a common fault I could tell them to look for?

Have you checked your oil level?

Yup. The noise happened the day after it was at the dealers when they had done a full change. It then came and went over the next few weeks. Sometimes it's really loud sometimes it's quiet.

To be honest the last time I checked my oil was a little low again (I'm so slack at checking) but even after I filled it up and had driven for a few days the noise would suddenly come back one morning.

That is a bit odd. I would keep an eye on the level, I'll bet that the tech filled it but did not run the engine and check again after. This would typically lower the level as it fills the filter chamber and pathway.
