Unhappy Hissing sound from my engine...

On the way to work this morning I noticed a hissing sound coming from my engine. I popped into my dealership straight away, the RECEPTIONIST, yes, the RECEPTIONIST came out and had a look under my bonnet and topped up my water level. She told me it was my radiator! ater drving the car for a few miles now i can srill hear the hissing sound.

Any opinions?

alex.

Could be a punctured radiator. Check for leaking under the car. Oh and keep a close eye on your temperature gauge

Hissing sound from your engine....

Alexcroft, it could either be a punctured radiator or they fitted a wrong radiator cap on your car.

If the radiator cap is not seated properly or the relief spring is too weak, pressure is released prematurely when the engine heats up to operating temperature. This causes the hissing sound you hear.

Another possibility is of course a pressure leak due to a loose connection somewhere in the cooling system.

Good luck.

If you hear the hissing when the engine is cold, then it is probably a vacuum leak. It could be a loose hose or even a bad intake manifold gasket. To find the source, use an old mechanic's trick. Take a piece of plastic tubing about two feet long, hold one end against your ear and move the other end around the engine until you isolate the hiss.

Lucky for you that you have a temperature gauge! Those of us with Navigation only have a Temperature IDIOT light.

Sigh.
