Gearbox, Flywheel AND Clutch!

Took my MCS into MINI today to investigate a rattle which goes away when the clutch is depressed. I was pretty sure it was the gearbox through hearing of past faults on other MINIs, and also because it kept popping out of 3rd gear a lot.

MINI got back to me this afternoon to say I need a new gearbox, flywheel and clutch!

How have all 3 of these things deteriorated so quickly? Or is it possible that the garage is wanting to replace all 3 just to cover themselves in case it's one of the 3 but they replace the wrong bit?

I'm a bit gutted to be honest, not even had the car 4 months yet and it's already had a new steering column and needs the 2 front wings painted due to loose plastic arches

It went in today to have the steering wheel replaced, but that never happened because they ordered the wrong one in!

The car is a 54 plate with only 21k

IMPORTANT!

The rattle is a known problem that requires a modified flywheel to be fitted.

Check the last few pages of this thread:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/faults-fi...tted-mini.html

and you will even find the service bulletin and part number! When I took mine in for the same fault I gave them these references, they agreed and did the work and it's a 100% cure!!!

Let me know if you have any problem finding those all important numbers in the last few pages!

Tigger.

Foxy, my first MCS was an 05 reg and i complained several times about the rattle which went when put foot on clutch! after a few hundred miles also mine was VERY stiff to put into 3rd gear? The garage dismissed all of these issues, until i had my first service at 10k. They then turned around and said that the rattle was very bad and did i know that 3rd gear didnt engage properly............!!!!!

Outcome was also a clutch, flywheel and gearbox...............This thankfully cured the problems

Interesting......
My 05 MCS has done about 22k now and still has a rattle that disappears when you press the clutch and the gear box is a bit stiff. Just took it in today for a check-up and they said that all was fine!!??
Quite how loud is the rattle?

Thanks for info guys.

The rattle was very quiet when I first picked up the car, but recently has been getting more noticeable. Yesterday it was pretty loud. I mentioned it a few weeks ago but they couldn't hear the noise, and they said they'd have a look today when it was in for the new steering wheel. Apparently they ended up stripping most of the car today to come to the conclusion they have. I hope that sorts it as I'm fed up with it already.

I'll certainly show that thread to them in case they want to take notice of it Cheers Tig

Unfortunatley its a common fault with the pre 04 gearboxes, where abouts are you in the country?

Yep its definatley a common fault, had this on my 51 plate 2002 Cooper.

The problem was that the crown wheel which is normally attached to the diff drive housing had seperated therefor allowing the crown wheel to rotate freely, which was preventing drive to be transferred to crown wheel.

This cost me a total of £1330 to have fixed, i soon sold the car once fixed tho even tho it drove brilliantly after.

Hi guys. I have recently bought a 2002 MC privately. It has done 64k. I had it 2 weeks and noticed a vibrating noise when in gear, the noise goes but not completely when clutch in. I have taken it 2 local garages and BMW dealer. BMW have told me i need a new gearbox which will cost £2000. I'm not being funny but the car is 5 years old!!! I know people who have had cars (from Fords to BMWs) more than double that age and and with loads more miles and havent even had such a major problem. BMW told me that it could last forever or 2mins like it is but will just be noisy.

I really am not a happy bunny as i love my little motor.

Has anyone contacted the bigwigs at Mini or had any feedback regarding this or similar issues?

Please, someone give me some good news.

Ta all

This to me sounds like an inherant problem with the car - There's no way a car of 3-5 years should need a new gearbox, clutch and flywheel at that age.........if you get caught just outside warranty BMW should atleast do it at cost............but then again that would be admitting there is a fault and it would cost them loads............it really sucks

MCS Gearbox noise

Hi There, I wonder if anyone can help me with my gearbox problem then?? I have an 04 Cooper S, brought 6 months ago from a main dealer. It has a gearbox whine in 3rd/4th gear only between 30mph and 40 mph only. It has been back to the dealer, but they say it is characteristic of the car and there is nothing wrong as far as they are concerned. The whine is getting progressively louder and now the clutch pedal feels very 'notchy' when depressed. Any ideas or feedback would be great before I take it back again....Thanx
