Metallic noise only when moving

Hi,

I have just brought my wife a 2003 mini one, and it has been fine for about a week, but has now developed a noise. Its not really so loud that it is unberable, but is very anoying and wasn't there a week ago!

Its like a metallic noise that is not there when idleing, it does not change with engine rpm but does get louder and faster as the car moves more quickly.

The noise is only there when the car is moving, and goes away when moving with the clutch down or when in neutral. At say 50mph the noise is as loud in 4th gear as it is in 5th gear.

Any ideas?

Great forum by the way!

Adam

If it sounds like it coming from the drivers foot well its the engine breather. My was making a similar noise as you descibed and turned out to be it. and yes its very annoying! neil

Talking

If you open the bonnet and listen to the rear left hand corner of the engine when idling, you mite be able to hear it. If u can its more than likely that. BMW admitted to me its a common problem, and the part is in demand at the moment. They didn't give me an explanation to why they fail but i assume its just clogged up! You can replace the part yourself, but I've heard stories (on other engines) about washers, nuts etc falling inside and we would really not want that!! if in doubt consult BMW is the best advice!

I know all of this because my was replaced yesterday, after 12k on a 05 mini!

good luck! -emu
