I have the dreaded ticking noise on my wifes mini one gearbox, my local mechanic says the gearbox will need to be changed but I would like to just change the oil first, and maybe add some friction reducer.

how easy is it for me to change the gearbox oil myself? do I need any specialist tools? How much oil does this box hold? Its a 2003 mini one 1.6

I really don't want to spend £100's (£1000's?) on this car that is only just 4 years old.

Wife going spare cos I wont let her drive it till this is sorted

Anyone know where I can buy the MTF 94 oil? Halfords and my local autoparts store have both refered me to the main dealer which is miles away! Is there any other subsitute that will work? Or can I buy mail order?

MTF 94 is manufactured by Texaco in the U.K. and is available from your MINI parts department; suitable substitutes would be 70/80W GL-4 manual transmission fluids like RL MTL Red Line Oil: Gear Lubricants . Google would be a good start for your source search locally.
