Windscreen crack - what's the latest thinking?

The screen on my 2002 MCS cracked today while I was washing the car. There is a 9" crack down from the top of the screen. I know this is an old problem and I have searched the threads but nothing seems very recent.

I'm loathe to let Autoglass or similar loose on my car and am considering getting it done by the dealer although it would obviously cost me a lot more doing it that way. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on that please?

Also, are the replacement screens a different spec to the originals?

Thanks.

I have the very same problem and will be taking it up with my dealer in a few weeks when it goes in for a service

I know that mine is not due to a stone chip as just appeared overnight

From what I have read before on this forum its a desin fault but dealers try and pass it back to your insurance as a chip

I would try your dealer and use as much ammo as possible

Good luck

regards

Antony

I tried everything to get mine replaced by Mini but they wouldn't have it. They found a pin prick of a stone chip that they say caused the crack and as such woudln't replace it. I went to BMW and still got no where. So ended up getting Autoglass to replace it!

I have had 2 cracked windscreens, I recomend RAC to do the job, it will be about £60 on your insurance for glass cover and won't effect your NCD.

Is that their very accurate test of running a ball point pen along the crack to determin if there is a chip in the glass?!
I argued that it was a stress crack not from a stone chip!

I had mine replaced by Autoglass and they were actually very good - mine was a definite stone chip BTW.

They replaced the A pillars and did a great job at short notice as I was off to France that day.

Yes that is the one!! But given that a HUGE stone chip didn't cause a crack, but a tiny one did, seems very odd to me!! I even tried to get the BMW regional assessor type person to come and check it but they were having none of it. In the end a £50 excess payment to Autoglass did the trick!

Thanks for your replies.

If I have if done by Autoglass I have to pay £75. My dealer has quoted £485, including VAT and a 10% discount as my car is over 4 years old. If I have it done there I can claim £150 on my insurance so the bottom line will be £335.

If i were you i would let autoglass or Rac do the work, i had mine replaced by the dealer a while back and they didnt bond it in properly, so i had a whailing noise at high speeds which eventually ripped the A pillar trim off on the m5, I tokk it in three times to tell them it was not right but they "couldnt" find anything wrong! I took it to another dealer and they replaced it again after a few weeks whilst trying to get the original dealer to fork out for it.
So, although, not all dealers will misfit a new screen, i would gladly let autoglass on my car as these guys replace screens EVERYDAY and the dealers technicians may be lucky to replace one a week/month who knows.
This way, autoglass is cheaper, and if it is not perfect they would have to sort it out anyway, and your not paying £335 quid for it to be done

Autoglass should get an original screen too if you insist on it

My insurance wouldn't let me have a BMW Screen, they would only let me use RAC or Autoglass, I have got the Vis pack on mine though, The RAC screen works just the same, They put a Pilkington screen in.

Si
