Fitting Spot Lights - Quite Odd

I attached spot lights to my mini over a year ago, but never wired them up. Having browsed various fitting instructions I thought i'd have a go. I used a relay to connect both lights to one port, one to the headlight , one to the headlight attachment screw and one to the positive terminal of the battery. When I tried the main beam (with the bonnet still open) all was well, the lights came on as they should have. However when I shut the bonnet, with the engine off and key in my hand, the spot lights came on..... This is beyond me and I need some advice.

Thanks,

Pedro

Sounds like it could be one of the following or a combination of
Faulty relay - unlikely
Relay is located in such a place that the bonnet liner knocks it when you close the bonnet
Terminals on relay not being insulated so live battery cable terminal touching feed to spot lights - if relay is knocked then this is more than likely the cause

Good knowledge Alan. Just swivelled round the relay and hey presto.

Thanks

It would be best to ensure that all of the terminals and their connectors are insulated. This way you will avoid any problems in the future and help prevent corrosion and electrical gremlins. Also bets to use a bit of silicon grease or Vaseline on the terminals

Enjoy being able to see better.
