Blown transmission?

Hey all,

I was pottering along in my beloved and "bang!", suddenly I couldn't engage second gear. After a few yards coasting, I managed to engage third (on the thankfully first attempt) and drove the 500 yards home. There, I found rather a lot of oil pouring out of the bottom of the car.

Obviously, I will be giving my dealer a ring in the morning, but has anything like this happenned to anybody and could you give me half an idea on the financial damage? As the warranty is out, I am considering swapping any parts myself (I'm competent enough) but as time is short (uni, new house etc) I barely have the time!

I'm a little disappointed that a well treated 4 year old with 40k is in such a state!

Many thanks,
Paul

it is unusual for the cooper s to have a failed gearbox,it could be just the driveshaft popped out -ask LOUI on here he knows all about that!
if it is a driveshaft the its not that expensive but may be worth checking the engine mounts and rubber bushes on suspension and wishbones

Are you sure it was oil pouring out? Could it possibly have been slave cylinder fluid? My clutch went out last week. Good thing I've had practice driving cars without a clutch (hint: stay out of first and use gas and gears). Now you've had practice too. Trust me, it comes in handy!
