MINI Emergency!

It looks like I'm about to find out how good MINI emergency service is! Started up the car and heard the sound of bubbling water from the dash, checked the coolant and its spat most of it out and is now well below the minimum level. It had an inspection 2 and coolant change less than 500 miles ago and I complained then about the fan coming on a lot to be told its normal!!!

Sounds like your inspection 2 was not done properly, The mini emergency service are usually a lot more honest than the people behind the desk at the dealers, make sure you tell him/her that the fan kept coming on since the inspection.

if you can get the mini E/S to say the inspecton is at fault this will save you lots of moaning to the dealer.

Good luck.

The bubbling behind the dash is air trapped in the heater matrix. this is a common fault. it needs rebleeding, as it sounds like it wasnt done properly the first time.

I had a similar problem with the fan coming on a lot and coolant level keep going down. Took it to the dealer and said the thermostat housing was cracked. Replaced under warranty, ok now

Sytners called today and confirmed what I had feared, Head gasket failure!!!! how can this happen on a car with 65000 miles, less than fours years old and a full service history?
being a powertrain design engineer I drive it with sympathy, fill up with top quality fuel and have it looked at whenever it makes the slightest noise. The warranty runs out in December and I'm fed up of defending it now and I'm tempted to get rid when I get it back.

I have the same issue in the last 2 weeks, the fan keeps starting again and again(with A/C turned off). The temp indicator inside the car shows everything is normal.

can somebody tell me what might be wrong? (I don't have any service to trust 100% so I want to know first a list with possible fauls before asking them)

thanks!

Car is now at home with new head gasket. going back in on Friday for replacement of a busted HT lead and to replace a bolt from the intercooler mount.
I'm expecting a call from Sytner tomorrow to discuss a replacement vehicle, watch this space!

sound like al ot of you guys need a scanguage. Your fan on the MCS should cut in at 104c and will lower the temp straight back to 92-93 which is what the MCS sits at as a running temp. i do prefer the scanguage to monitor this. believe me, do not trust the vehicle temp guage as it is very inaccurate.

Sytner are being excellent about it actually. They have agreed a replacement vehicle and are looking for an appropriate car, trouble is mine is quite highly specced so its quite hard to find another one like it.

Sounds like they are doing a good job in sorting you out then - good luck with finding a new one

very odd.....Now did the head gasket fail because it was its time or because the engine overheated?

I think one possibility is an airlock in the coolant. This failure happened les than five hundred miles after having the coolant changed. The temp gauge didn't leave the middle. Oil looked okay afterwards but there was a hell load of steam from the exhaust whilst it was being loaded onto the recovery truck!

You may be right about the airlock. An airlock will create a bubble of air that allows the metal touched by the air bubble to superheat and warps the metal. These cars are easily airlocked and require extensive bleeding when changing coolant, more so than most cars. There are three bleed valves and the heater must be opened electrically and held open during refill. In addition, the pressur cap must be kept open while the newly refilled system is run up to the point the thermostat opens and then watched until all bubbles stop coming up in the filler neck or header tank in the S.
