Windscreen Crack

I was driving home from work the other day and i got a huge stone hit the windscreen and has made a crack/chip in the windscreen. It needs replacing as is right in drivers line of sight.

I know i can get it done on my insurance with adrian flux, who will they use to get it done or will they get me to get it done and invoice them?

Which company knows what they are doing as regards MINI windscreens? is there anything i need to make sure they do when they do replace it?

Dan

I had autoglass replace my windscreen, they did a great job...
two things to watch out for though...
a. before fitting make sure that there are no scuffs on the glass surface as they often get scraped when taking them out the racks... (they had to replace the first screen fitted because of this)
b. they replace the black plastic strips running up the sides of the screen and the top plastic strip... it all comes as part of the replacement kit but some fitters can't be arsed to fit new part!!

Had my windscreen replaced about 3 weeks ago, autoglass replaced it. They did a good job and like B1ANK said they also replaced the black strips at each side of the windscreen (not sure if this is normal practice). I was also told that should there be any problems the windscreen is guaranteed (to me) until the car is sold.

Only thing I would say to watch out for is that my white roof now has a slight visible mark just above the plastic strip that runs along the top of the windscreen/roof. Some of this looks like its just a build up of dirt which will go once I clean the car but it also looks like some adhesive from the previous plastic strip is still on it. GUTTED

Hope this helps.

I've had 2 screens (in 5 years). It wouldn't hurt to ask the fitter to be careful of the edge of the roof as mine acquired a couple of fingerprint sized dents in it just under the seal when it was last changed and nobody owned up.

The time before that it was done under warranty by the BMW dealer and the fitter dropped the new screen onto the scuttle as they put it in and scratched the paint .

Hi all, I am new to the site but not to mini’s

I have a 2003 MCS which I am about to trade in for a new MCS with JCW kit (ready end of October). I also have a clasic mini with a 1700cc x-flow engine.

When trying to get the best trade in price, my local Mini dealer was going to knock off £500 from the value because of the chip in the windscreen and suggested I get it fixed/replaced using my insurance.

I duly called my insurance company who agreed the replacement and put me onto RAC Windscreens. This is where it all starts to go wrong.

RAC windscreens turned up and the fitter said he does loads of minis and it would not take long. I should have stopped him there and then when he was prizing off the trim clips with a screw driver, but, he said he new what he was doing, so I left him to it.

True to his word the window was fitted quickly, but was a bodge job from hell.

At first I noticed a scratch on the top of the wing, then the other scratches along the lower trim.

I then notice the scratches on the side trims where he'd stored them on the ground under the car. Then the top rubber trim which was so loose you could see the top of the glass showing, and the VIN No. which was barely visible under the mastic sealer and the tiny aperture of an RAC branded window.

And to top it all, the window was an inch out of centre.

To be fair to the guy he did not deny scratching my car and said they would have it fixed, but first he would go to his van and produce a tin of T-Cut and in true,” I don’t just fit windscreens, I can also a repair cars” he tried to polish the scratch out.

I could not wait for him to leave quick enough and was instantly on the phone to the RAC customer service.

After a few harsh words and to cut a long story short the RAC agreed they would have my car repaired.

A week later a second fitter replaced the RAC branded screen with an original mini screen along with the new black side trims and rubber top trim.

As previously mentioned, the black side trims and top rubber seal are standard parts of a new windscreen kit and should be fitted as standards. You will probably find the ones I should have had first time round on ebay.

On Wednesday the 3rd Oct (3 weeks later) my car was eventually booked into a repair shop, where I received my Skoda Fabia courtesy car.

On Friday the 5th I called to find out when it would be completed to discover they were waiting for the RAC to approve the quote. Why the wait when it was the RAC that organised the repairer and the time.

After several more calls to the RAC eventually approve the repair. Their excuse for the delay was “ they did not know my car was at the repair centre”.

Today I have been told it will be ready on Friday.

Providing I get my car back on Friday, the moral of the story is;

1) Don’t use RAC windscreens
2) Don’t use RAC windscreens
3) Don’t have an RAC branded Windscreen. Insist on a genuine windscreen
4) And, don’t use RAC windscreens
