fuel gauge problem

The fuel gauge on my 2001 Mini One periodically stays on empty even after filling up with fuel.
It then seems to recover and show an accurate reading. Does anyone know what this problem might be and how to cure it ?

My 02 cooper does the same every now and again. I normaly cure it by filling the tank right to the filler neck. Sorry thats as much help as i can be.
