United-Kingdom Exhaust deterioration - Cooper S

Hi

I have just purchased a 53 plate Cooper S from a dealer. The MOT has an advisory sheet which states that, 'the offside rear exhaust system is partly deteriorated'

The car has done 19k miles and the dealer neglected to tell me about it.

I have spoken to 2 separate Mini dealers about the costs for replacement and both of them immediately knew what the problem was and advised that whilst this appears on MOTS quite a bit, the exhaust has several skins and it only appears to be the outer one that shows early wear.

This has given me some confidence as I didn't give them a leading question. Does anyone out there has similar experience or knowledge? Basically, should I be concerned or not? A replacement seems to be about £300 for the back box.

Many thanks, Andrea

The exhaust does have a few skins as mentioned but personaly id keep on there back to have it replaced.

Other wise look on ebay they go cheap enough on there.

I wouldn't have expected a dealer to draw your attention to it. It's on the MOT, which you should have checked when you bought it.

What I'd be most concerned about are the mounting brackets. If they're the type that clamp around the exhaust boxes, check that the mountings aren't rusting through on the top corners. That seems quite common and it's worth catching before the box drops off.

They do have several skins. As long as the mounting is good, you can let keep an eye on it and only replace it when you really need to.

It's worth a go asking the dealer to fix it, but personally I don't think there's much you can do if they don't agree. They might give you a discount on a new exhaust, though.
