Offline | Supercharger louder ticking than ever!! My engine has recently gotten pretty loud and it seems to be near the supercharger. It is a sort of loud Ticking noise. It always had a sort of ticking, but now it is pretty loud. I only really hear it at idle and when the hood is open it really sounds different than it ever has. Can anyone help me out and let me know why this could be? It shouldn't be the lifters or anything right? It really sounds like it is where the intercooler is, or underneith it. What could it be??? |

Offline | Failures of the early model crankshaft vibration damper are fairly common. Once the rubber is compromised it begins to “ding” then rattle. Many have reported a “ticking” noise, although the noise sounded more like a rattling chain to me. Place your ear near the left wheel well and see if that may be the area where the noise is emanating. Crankshaft damper failure is not confined to the early model; the later version has also had a few failure reports. A loose idler pulley can also “tick”, as well as a failing tensioner pulley. Take a look at the tensioner arm damper to see if it is leaking or the bushings prolapsed from their fasteners. Then there is impending water pump drive gear failure MINI COOPER :: North American Motoring - Rattle : Supercharger / Water Pump . For this one use a mechanic’s stethoscope to get the best listen, or, place a large screw driver against the back of the SC and your ear on the handle. If the vehicle overheats, it is terminal, and the only solution is to replace the SC because Eaton does not supply water pump drive gear replacement parts. |

Offline | Thanks for that info! I will have it checked soon. What could these things cause besides the ticking sound? If it is a loose Idler pulley what do you do? Failing Tensioner Pully? and so on? What do you think my first step should be. The supercharger is working great (it seems) It actually seems to have a louder whine than ever before. Would any of these issues cause the supercharget to get louder? |
