I have a 2002 Mini Copper which i bought 2nd hand. The tailgate wont open now. I tried using the emergency ring that is under the back seats but it appears that this missing also Any ideas of now to get it open without bring it back to the garage.

All help is much appreciated

I had the same trouble with my '03 S just before I sold it. Had taken it to the detailers, they washed it but somehow water got into something & caused the hatch door release wiring to malfunction. Nothing worked: not the handle switch, not the lock control toggle, nothing. Once it had a chance to dry out, it worked fine for many weeks.

Just before the new owner picked it up I'd washed it again myself & the same thing happened.
