Offline | New Clutch Gearbox and Bonnet Release! Just thought I'd share my little story with you all. It's one that seems all too familiar to a lot of you I'm sure. I've had my MC for just over a yer. All been fantastic, had it MOT'd, all ok. Driving back and heard this noise, press the cluch it goes. When idle it's not there. Oil was a bit low so went to top up, bonnet wouldn't release on one side! Take a look at the cable inside, yes, well and truely stuck! ![]() Took it to the guy who looks after my car, you guessed it, needs a new gearbox!! "May as well do the clutch while we're there'. Looks like your bonnet release cable has snapped too! Anyway, goes in on monday, no Mini for a week, and £1600 poorer! Although from what I've read that's not bad for all those bits. ![]() Thanks guys! ![]() |

Offline | Well it's getting worse every time I drive, and if the box goes there's a risk it'll take the drive shaft with it!! I totally trust the guy who's doing it. It is it's original box so 50k miles on a Mini box is ok from what I've read! |

Offline | Your gearbox has done quite well really - ours is having it's gearbox changed under warranty after 26k miles! By the way £1600 is not too bad because I'm sure somebody on here was talking £2800 for a new gearbox ![]() |

| MINI2 Senior | Mine is going in with a clunk when u lift the clutch pedal. I would think this would be something to do with the clutch assembly but my local dealer insists its the gearbox. A similar thing happened in my first mini, they changed the gearbox, then put it all back together, only to realise it was the clutch. They told me to keep the gearbox anyway lol!! ![]() Focus > Mini One > Mini Cooper > Mini Cooper > BMW 316 > BMW 318 > MINI ONE > BMW 120i > MINI ONE PEPPER! - IM BACK!! |

| MINI2 Senior | between u and me, I think its more cosmetic than serious. Take it in tho, be prepared tho cos its 2 days work, if ur car aint under warranty. I would just leave it. ![]() Focus > Mini One > Mini Cooper > Mini Cooper > BMW 316 > BMW 318 > MINI ONE > BMW 120i > MINI ONE PEPPER! - IM BACK!! |

| MINI2 Senior | yer I know what you mean. I have had 4 minis and they all had their share of serious problems. I left it for a couple of years then bought a new one in march 06. - Instead of worrying about rattles I just bought the HK system to drown them out!! I will report back when I have had it done 3rd jan!! - To let you know exactly what it was and if it is serioous, which I doubt! ![]() Focus > Mini One > Mini Cooper > Mini Cooper > BMW 316 > BMW 318 > MINI ONE > BMW 120i > MINI ONE PEPPER! - IM BACK!! |

Offline | I'm with you, a clunk when releasing the clutch is very likely bad dampers in the dual mass flywheel assembly, not the gearbox. The Mini should never had been fitted with a dual mass flywheel, they are meant for luxury barges, not sporty cars. They damp the clutch engegement to make it smooth, but they wear out and get clunky. A standard clutch would go 100K miles easily without trouble. |
