Offline | Problem with 2001 Cooper, EML wont rev above 2000rpm Hi all, New to the forum, I have been searching but cant find anything on this problem so hopefully someone can help. I am having a problem with my girlfriends 2001 Mini Cooper. Its an intermittent fault but is becomming more common now. When the car is started the EML light stays on and the car idles very roughly, like its misfiring and it wont rev above 2000rpm. I presume this is some sort of limp mode it is going into. if the car is continually switched off and restarted it will eventually stop doing this and be normal again. There doesnt seem to be a distinction between the car being cold or warm. I have changed the plugs and leads with genuine BMW/MINI Items as part of an oil and filters service and this didnt make a difference. We did notice that when the car is cold and this happens the coolant temp gauge goes up a towards 1/4 way even though the engine is completely cold. Has anyone experienced this before? I was considering replacing the coil pack next but I was under the impression that coil packs either work or dont and not intermittently so dont think its this at all. I read on here somewhere about a software upgrade and I dont know if the car ever got one. I have the B100 scan tool but when I try looking for a fault code, it keeps throwing up a Error message. I am not sure if this scan tool works with the mini. Any suggestions appreciated. |

Offline | This car needs to go on the scanner at the dealer, it may have a software or loom fault and nothing else is going to fix it if this is the case. The behavior of constantly rebooting fixes it is the key. The only thing you can do is to load test (not voltage test) the battery and make sure it has the ampacity to run the car, if it is low, it can cause the software failure. The reflash job is not real expensive compared to chasing the problem in the driveway with only your wallet to throw at it!. |

Offline | I have had similar problem with mine, EML would come on while driving, also missing on start up at times an not rev. over 2000. Had the codes read at a friends garage and all connected to throttle body. Put a 2nd hand throttle body in last weekend (£10 off ebay) and the car has run ace all week!!! It's covered 100+ miles this week so problem sorted (touch wood). Hope you get it sorted soon |
