Grinding noise from above rear wheel arch

I have recently heard a noise coming from the rear passenger side (sounds like it is coming from the wheel arch area) but it only happens when i have a passenger or 2 in the back, so it's obviously due to the weight.
I have had a look under the wheel arch but i can't see anything obvious hanging down or close to the wheel. Although, it only normally happens when i drive a corner fast or go over a bump - so it's difficult to look at.

Does anyone have any ideas or experinced this themselves?

Cheers

If the car is lowered i would say the tyres are rubbing. But it sounds more like a busted shock?

No, the car isnt lowered. It only happens with people in the back though, which made me wonder whether it is the shock as i thought it would make the noise all of the time?

My experience with rubbing

what kind of wheels do you have?
I have rubbing at the back when the car is loaded with my winter wheels. The summer wheels are 17" S-lites and there is no rubbing at all. I can see where the tyre is making contact with the arch. If you see carefully around the inner edge of the arch at around 2 o'clock there is a metal clip. The rubbing in my car happens at that area. The sound is very annoying but it happens only when the car is loaded. My car is not lowered at all.

At least you get better at dodging bumps on the road

Hope this helps

Alex

I've got an 02 cooper s with 17" S-lites with the same problem. I only notice the problem when theres people in the back. I thought the shock absorbers had gone and have been trying to price osome up. Now i'm not sure! is this a common problem with 4 people in a mini?
