Hissing Noise from Steering Column

Hi there!!

I have had 2 steering columns in my mini 2006 R50. When it was first done, I could hear a hiss from the column ish area when I revved. Rev harder, hiss got worse.

Anyho, the next time I had the column changed. The hiss was mad, so I told the tech and he said he knew what it was, and sorted it. But the hiss is still bad and I want to silent it.

I think its some sort of gasket or sealer somewhere, does anyone know what this could be so I can sort it.

I've had loads of cars with this kinda sound.. i wont worry about it too much.. the only thing i could think it could be is the power stearing pump.. wot ur to think is that 1.6 litre lump is heavy on a little car like mini... i had i 2 .0 litre clio and the sounds that made omg....

Hmmm... I've noticed something along these lines too - in my March 2004 MINI ONE.

It doesn't sound like anything's going particularly wrong, but it does sound like the car is developing a new noise as it ages. I couldn't track it any more precisely than the driver's footwell - as normally when I notice it, I'm doing 45-60mph so it would be insane not to be focused on the road.

If anyone has any tips for quietening it down or silencing it, I'd also be interested!

Many thanks in advance,
Andrew.

Hi there, thanks for all the replys. Thing is this isnt a fault, this is a rubber sealer that is between the driver footwell and the engine. I just dont know how to sort it.

As for the post above, its not the power steering pump, its the engine, I think its the rubber sealer that connects the steering through the bulkhead.

I too have the hissing sound you mention. I have only just had my steering column changed due to a "clonking" sound so it is rather annoying that there is another problem straight away...

I can only hear it at low speeds as road roar etc drowns it out at most speeds (anything above about 10mph) but i guess I will be going back to BMW yet again. theminiv - post if you manage to find out for sure what the cause is...

Yes, this is the sound. Basically, when my dealer changed the column for the second time, I noticed the noise. The mechanic knew what it was and sorted it.

I think there is a wire or something that goes through the bulkhead, and there is a rubber sealer there to stop any crud from the road getting into the car. I think that needs tightening or something.

I will ring the dealer tomorrow and post my findings. Hopefully it will be simple.
