Loud moan when turning engine off

When I stop the engine I get a load moan as the engine stops turning. It seems to be worse when the car is cold and hasn't been running for long. Turning the steering wheel doesn't make any difference so I don't think it is power steering related.

BTW I have a 2003 MCS

I believe its the throttle or bypass valves closing to a preset possition ready for the next start-up. Mine does it all the time, its actually quite loud

Look at the rubber pipe on the top left of the engine cylinder head -they go soft and moo like a cow!! the pipe connects to a grey pipe that runs down to the supercharger -£15 ish for a new one

Does that moo when under load or when shutting down though? Mine like above is when shutting down (in fact its after the engine has actually stopped running completely), and as I had always assumed this noise was just normal as it was mixed with electronic whirr/whine which was noted as the valves resetting ready for cold start?!

You were quite right, I can actually see the pipe squashing closed on vacuum. I wonder if this is the cause of the poor fuel consumption I have noticed lately.

I have sourced the replacement pipe. It looks like I need to remove the intercooler in order to replace the whole pipe. You don't happen to have any instructions do you?

I have fixed this now. For future reference this is what I did:
* Removed the intercooler cover (four torx screws)
* Undid the intercooler bellows (four torx screws at each end)
* Removed both intercooler brackets (two torx screws each)
* Pushed the intercooler to one side then slide it out to remove
* Heated the new pipe by running under hot water then seperated the two sections
* Replaced the small section of pipe on the car
* Re-installation was the reverse of removal

I have a mini one, and my engine did a similar thing, when I turned it off the other night, it made a consistent noise, which sounded like a fan, very loud. But It would not stop, I waited for a couple of mins, and decided to start the engine, then turn off again, that stopped it.

But im a little worried why it did that! What would be causing that?? Its still under warrenty, do you think its worth taking to the dealership for them to look at?

, which sounded like a fan,

probably the fan , -something catching in it -twig etc, hopefully not the rad!!
the second start pumped cooler water round and the fan stopped-no noise
warranty or not it needs looking at , cars cost ,and they cost more if things are ignored, they seldom self fix!!!

It wasnt anything catching in it, didnt sound anything like that. It was just a loud fan like noise when I turned the engine off. It didnt stop until after I turned engine back on and off again. Which is concerning. So you think I should mention it to the dealership? As its still under warrenty?

there isnt much running after switching off the engine, fan ,possibly PAS pump if broken, yes you should get it checked ! the warranty is not a reason for getting cars checked or not
