Some advise please

Hi, Im not technically minded so i'd like some advise please.

Today when driving down the motorway the gearstick disengauged from the gearbox. The RAC came to have a look at it and he just clipped the cables that joined the two back together. I managed to drive home but am worried that it might happen again. Is this a major problem as something like this shouldnt happen right?

Thanks in advance

I've never heard of that one but I think it would be worth getting a MINI dealer to check it over.

What model is the car? Do you have TLC or a Cherished warranty? Where are you - in case anyone can recommend a particular dealer nearby?

This has happend before, especially with some enthusiastic gearchanges, there is a circlip that holds the cable in place and it can be tricky to clip in . the cable was altered on later cars and has a different end on it ,these are less prone to popping off I believe-what year is the car?

Thanks for the reply, i have a 51 reg mini in preston so its a first generation and i think youve hit the nail on the head with the circlip. Is this a problem that can be recitfied? I dont want it just coming off again, at the moment its held in with some cable tie.

circlip part number 25117515461 if early cable assy or 25117527285 if later one - cost is minimal they tend to bend if removed and never go back in nicely -not sure which cable assy you have but get both to make sure as they are real cheap.
worth also adding 2 cable ties in figure 8 lower down the pair of cables where they clip to the front floorpan/bulkhead near exhaust manifold to hold the cables parallel and secure to the body at that point ,as it helps smooth gearchanges especially reverse
