whinning sound?

Hello,

just recently I have noticed the following problem. My car starts perfectly first time, however when at about 2k revs changing from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to third, there is a light whinning/grinding sound.
Now my exhaust is well and truelly on its way out, getting it changed this week, could this be to do with it? The noise isnt coming from exhaust, coming from under bonnet, but cant drive aloong with head under bonnet so unable to locate exactly where sound is coming from!
