Steering troubles, question

Greetings,

My excellent mechanics can't get at the diagnostic codes to figure out what is wrong with the steering on my 2004 Mini Cooper. Steering is out, fluid is good, fan seems to work. I fear I need a new pump; not cheap. Any suggestions?

Also, can a MINI be converted to manual steering?
