Hi JNL08,

We had it happen on our old cooper;

Did you buy it from MINI or privately? How long ago did you buy it?

What we did was go back to MINI and complain that it wasn't fit for purpose.
They then tried to tell us it was because we were putting handcream on then using the car.
We stuck to our guns, and after getting them to agree to part pay, we went to BMW/MINI customer service/head office, explained our situation and that we didn't feel it was acceptable to expect us to pay for it to be replaced.

So in the end, they paid for the steering wheel and we paid for the fitting at 1/4 the actual price.

So in summary, if you've bought it from MINI and use the same dealer for servicing etc

1. Go back to your MINI dealer and explain the situation
2. When they tell you it's handcream, tell them you don't use handcream (if you don't, i'm not suggesting you lie to them)
3. If they agree to pay for the parts and you pay fitting (at reduced cost) then go for that, otherwise
4. Speak to someone on the BMW customer service line (0870 5050 160) and explain that it's detracting from your ownership experience and is making you reconsider purchasing a new MINI
5. After you've tried both avenues you wont get much further so hopefully you'll have reached a compromised agreement

If you've not bought it from MINI:

1. Talk to your MINI dealer and explain the situation
2. Ask if they would be prepared to subsidise the cost of replacement (i wouldn't expect much more than 10% off unless you've got a few BMWs/MINIs)
3. Speak to BMW customer service and see if you can get anything out of them
4. Pray one of them agrees to give you some money off
