is this a big job at all like rebuilding the gearbox? or can u just change the bearnings in the gearbox and walla done?

Please reply ppl as i can see that mini's have had their fair share of problems with gearboxes....

The garage want £700 to rebuild my gearbox, not sure about that

Most garages would fit an exchange reconditioned gearbox rather than rebuild it themselves. If you search on MINI2 there are a few replacement options available.
Here is link to recon box from MiniMatt :-
** RECONDITIONED ** BMW MINI GEARBOX 00/04 on eBay, also, Mini, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 01-May-08 11:19:07 BST)
The early Ones and Cooper Midland gearbox are prone to failure so fitting a secondhand used gearbox would have no long term guarantee.

i just did mine.
was a bearing on the output shaft. if the gearbox is just making noise when its in gear and in motion, its probably the output shaft bearing. this was the case for me. i replaced all bearings at a cost of about AUD$200. problem solved. hope this helps
