I looked for an answer but came up a bit short so I'll post these questions again....

does anyone else get a loud semi rythmic... every 3-6 seconds apart tap or ping noise when they are stopped (it may be there while moving, I've not noticed it tho)? I noticed it recently.. almost like something contracting/expanding due to tempature...

also, anyone know the definative answer to the 1st to 2nd gear noise (clunk)?

My S is incredibly noisy from outside the car when cooling down. Is this when you notice the pinging noise ?.

I had a Cooper for a week recently with 8500 km's on it, and that was also extremely noisy when stopped after a run.

You shouldn't be getting any clunks from your gearbox. Use the search engine with "gearbox" or "gearbox noise", this has been raised before I'm sure.
