Exclamation Fire In The Mini One

Has anyone else had a fire under the bonnet of a Mini One?
My wifes mini caught fire last night and there was no apparent cause. Needless to say it was a scary experience for her.

New one to me! Sorry to hear that

Hope this has not put you off the MINI, and welcome to MINI2!

Some people have mentioned the sound and heat proofing material on the underside of the bonnet smouldering a bit... was that it?

It was the sound proofing that was on fire, it made a right mess of the plastic casing on the engine - is it covered by the warranty?

The warranty should cover this. If your dealer won't do it go direct to MINI.

Red/Black R56 Cooper Stripes, CHILLI, ASC+T, MINI HiFi, Piano Black Dash, Red Colour Line, Heated Mirrors/Jets, Spare Wheel, Smoker Pack!

I *think* others got this done under warranty so hopefully yes

Dom - who doesn't have the soundproofing

This is the third or fourth instance of this I have heard of.

I will highlight it once more with the people at MINI HQ.

I think there's a problem.

Search for 'fire' in the faults and fixes forum.

Official answer thus far has been 'external objects' causing this smouldering or burning.

If that is the case they should be changed for something that is less flammable

Its almost a year old, so I think it was October 2001 - I'd have to check that with my wife.

On a similar note - would there be any problems with removing the material, in case people are worried

I was about to ask the same thing. I was thinking about asking the dealer to leave it off when they do the repairs.

Not heard of this either, sounds a bit worrying to me. Was the MINI a write-off?

It wasn't a write off. Luckily we managed to douse it with water before it got out of hand.

We should hear from the dealer this afternoon about how much damage there is.

No mini for a few days!!
At least it'll get a nice valet job done though
