Gutter Trim Saga [continued]

My MINI ONE suffers from the loose gutter trim fault.
I have had new style trim on back order for 23 weeks!!!.
Rang up my dealer today and was told that the new design trim will not be released by BMW until all the old style gutters are used up.
Now, this is the good part-BMW say I can have two old style trim but they will not guarantee that the trim will fit properly!.So i could end up with no trim on the car at all.
Has any MINI owners out there had their gutter trim replaced,if so,was the job succesful?.
Basicaly what I am saying is, is it worth holding on for the revised trim or should I go for the origonal style trim ?.
And they call this customer service?.
Yours in frustration,
RAYASP.

Success is a relative word in BMW world...

I had one of the gutters replaced - thats what the service guy said - or rather re-fitted - that's what I think it actually happened. They seemed to have used some guey black stuff to fix it in place. It feels solid, but not sure I like this approach.

On later cars the gutters seem to be better fitted - so far...

Before we picked up our 'ex-demo' from the dealer, I asked for one of the gutters, which had become detached at the end, to be replaced. On the day I found that they had just *fixed* it by gluing it down with black silicone sealant. I immediately peeled it back off and they agreed to replace it. Two months later it's still firmly fixed. In fact it's better than the opposite (original) trim

I still cannot get any joy out of BMW-the latest suggestion is to get the old style guttering fitted as a 'temporary measure' and get the new style fitted when BMW decide to release it.In that case why did'nt they just give me the spares last June instead of asking me to hold on for the new design?.My dealership seem quite embarassed at BMWs stance but don't seem to want to help.
Sorry to go on about it but it feels good to have a good moan and get it out of my system!.
Cheers,

I had an interesting experience with my roof trim! I have a January 02 Cooper. The trim above the windscreen flew off after about two days. It's subsequently been replaced six times since until the dealer finally realised that the problem was due to the windscreen being fitted to low so that there is not a decent seal. And I had to inform them of that after reading a post on here.

So they re-positioned the windscreen about two weeks ago and the trim stayed in place. But.... it looks like they did not seal the windscren properly so on Sunday morning I stepped into my car to find half an inch of rainwater sitting in the footwell! Oh joy

It's in the garage today so I shall see what they have to say about it.

I have a Nov 02 build Mini Cooper which I picked up last saturday and I have noticed one side of the gutter trim is coming away at the back of the side section. Will this car have the new style trim? If so I would suggest it is no better than the old trim. I will not be sanctioning them sticking it down with silicone sealant. Does anyone know how the trim is affixed in the factory?

Forgot to mention... I have the same problem as you brycem.

The trim that goes round the sides is affixed with clips at the front and rear of the car and probably one in the middle.

So in addition to drying my car out they will be replacing the clip at the rear to try to keep the trim on!

I had both gutter trim re-newed last Tuesday. This is the origonal style trim- why BMW did not supply these trims to me last June instead of waiting for the mystical new style trim, well words fail me.I'm sorry but I do not have a high opinion of MINI after sales service.

It was in the driver side but as your cas is LHD then it's the same side as my RHD car.

It turns out the problem wasn't the windscreen though but the door seals. So now the car's in the garage for a week while they wait for the parts and I get to drive a Nissan Almera!!

I had the guttering replaced on my car a few months ago, part of the fix involved the black silicone sealant which promptly melted in the sun and dripped down my passenger side window. A beautifully botched job by the dealers. It had to be redone and so far so good (not often I can say that about my car). Not very impressive though if they are effectively attached to the car by a couple of clips and some glue.

Saw in Popular Mechanics that 3M has a new product called Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape. It will stick loose bodyside moldings, claddings, wheel flares, and rocker panel trim. It uses a special adhesive that cures fully in 24 hours. It might work for gutter trim too. www.3mautomotivetape.com
