Heater fan howls at lowest setting.

My heater fan is driving me crazy making an irritating fluctuating howl. In general the MINI fan is noisy but this problem sound occurs in the lowest speed setting. (With the auto air control option.) It is like the speed controller has a resonance? Anyone else?

Don't use the lowest setting. Turn up your radio or open your window. Better yet, stomp on the 'loud' pedal until you can hear the blower whine.

Motor on, Dudes and Dudettes!!!

Yea guys, your a lot of help. I can't stand the factory sound system so it's motor noise for music (sweet). This fan noise is apparent when traveling to shop for new componants in traffic. Is my fan defective?

Since no one has come forward with a similar complaint, I'd suspect that what you are experiancing is a genuine defect. (The MINI's fan is alledgedly loud, but doesn't usually do a "fluctuating howl".)

I'd check with my dealer.

I have the manual control.
When I set the fan speed to 1, it whistle.
If I turn it up to 2 and above. it is gone.

This is driving me crazy.

I tend to shut it off or turn it up now.

I have auto control, but mine is exactly the same as this, I turn it to manual to get rid of the whistle.

I don't know how old your car is, but for people who have recieved a new mini in the last 2 months and have noticed a whistle from the heater/aircon, this is why:-

BMW tried to 'costcut' by removing a strip of foam from a control surface within the Hvac assembly.

It was discovered that this caused the Hvac to 'whistle' during operation.
All cars that were still in the factory were put to one side and rectified.
The foam strip was then promptly included in assembly once again.

It is likely that some cars were transported before this side effect was discovered.
Anyone with a new mini purchased within the last 2 months, who expierience Hvac whistle, should see their dealer and explain what I have just posted.

p.s anyone with an older car, experiencing Hvac whistle, it is likely that this strip of foam is the cause anyway, probably due to incorrect fitment.
See your dealer also.

All the best.

Hi, I heard you are now an independant. Good luck in the future. Your info has been a big help.

If it not too much to ask could you elaborate on the missing foam in my fan box. I am under the dash now to wire my stereo and might just take this on.

Thanks in advance.

I have manual set up, I keep mine set at the second or third settings only. No problems with it so far.

The problem was only found on auto aircon cars, but you could still check if you wish.

The glove box needs to be removed. The airflow flap can then be seen in the area behind it.

The foam strip should be across the flap at the hinged side. The idea is that the strip is pinched when the flap closes preventing air flow past the flap on that side which is what causes the whistle.

Its a bit of a tricky one to explain in words, but you should understand it when you look.

Bad Ess & MiNiGuY,

Got the same problem on my Cooper with Auto A/C. Only noticable on the lowest fan speed.

It is a June build car.

Funny thing is; my fan noise started a couple of months after I bought the car. Did not notice it when it was new.

Life is short! Why drive a boring car?!

MiNiGuY...I have the glove box out (no problem) and I am looking at the recirculator vent flap? It is foam covered on the side facing out. Should I be looking at the hinge area on this?

Thanks in advance...

I've had mine sorted out, had just the same problem with my climate auto ac, the dealer told me that it was to do with the back mechanism of one of the vents...very annoying whistle which I am very happy to have got rid of!! Sadly when dismantling the dashboard and the glovebox, the glovebox now rattles like nobodys business!! So trip to the dealer tomorrow to rectify the problem!

Regards
Christopher
