Offline | Hi, I was wondering if any of you had the same experience. I parked my car, turned off the ignition, and removed the key and locked the door without paying much attention. When I got out of the car and locked the door, my friend said the engine was still on! I looked and there it was, still running! The lights were all off(though I couldn't say for sure since I was all panicked, angry, etc. to calmly think!). I unlocked the door and inserted the key, turned the key to the far right (since it wouldn't do the supposed 'starting' of the engine this time) and then turned it off. The engine turned off this time, but this experience left me freaking about cooper! Plus the lurching/near-stalling/stalling problems? I'm not sure what I would do if I face any MORE problems... ![]() Last edited by CooperLuv : Jan 17th, 2003 at 05:33 PM. |

Offline | Hi cooperluv There is a mechanical link between the lock barrel and the ignition,s electrical switch ..I have had it before on bm's when the link rod can become detached/missaligned and when you turn youre key to the fully left position the electric switch does'nt go all the way to the left in unison..and remains in the ignition on state...if you take out the key and put it back in as you did it normally cures it...for now! It generally means youre ignition housing assemmbly is on it's way out..but i would'nt of thought that on a new mini..the ignition housing is what the barrel sits in and the switch is mounted to...i have had it before so that i have had to remove the steering cowls and the switch in order to manually pull out the connecting rod from the barrel to the switch..Nightmare! Anyway i hope this may help you... cheers |

Offline | Thanks for the fast reply, here2help.I have my first appointment today for the recall, and I have a long list of *SOME* of the problems with cooper already, all thanks to you and others' tips on this board. I would definitely ask them to update the software. Oh, by the way, all these fixes/updates are covered by the warranty, right? I wish I could use the 'mechanical terms' to discuss (and preferably, harass! ) with the mechanic -- they are usually not very informative or as helpful to car-ignorant people like me! |

Offline | Re: Thanks for the fast reply Yes, your limited new car warranty should cover for any required DME software updates. How long is the warranty coverage in Canada? Here in the US we get 4 years/50,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty plus 3 years/36,000 miles free scheduled maintenance. '02 MINI Cooper CVT On Order: 2004 MCS (Est production date: 9/5/03) |

| MINI2 Master | No free maint. here but perhaps they give it to you on the west coast. Still a 4/year 80000km (50000mile) warranty though (trying very hard to make it last 4 years but the mileage is creeping up...). Hope they get all your problems solved ASAP. Offline | Are you sure it wasn't the radiator cooling fans running and not the engine? Don't take offense just thought I'd throw this out there. retroom 2003 MC,LY/W, sport package, wht wheels, cruise, chrome, Kaleido cloth/black, OB computer |

Offline | offense? none taken I'm pretty sure it was the engine, but if it was the cooling fan, is it normal to vibrate like that after the engine was off?? Hmmm... |

Offline | When my car is idling I barely feel any vibration. Strange...let us know if it happens again. ![]() retroom 2003 MC,LY/W, sport package, wht wheels, cruise, chrome, Kaleido cloth/black, OB computer |

Offline | My 2003 Cooper (have it 2 weeks) just did the same thing. (It was like a Stephen King story.) It is now at the service center; tey won't get to it for a few days. It was definitely the engine on, not the fan. |
