i am about to purchase a used 2002 S. i first turned on the car, and moved the steering wheel from side to side, and i noticed it made a mousy noise, as if the tires were rubbing against water. but it wasn't water, sounds like something electric. is that the sound its supposed to make due to the electric powered rack & pinion steering wheel? please help, thanks!

Yes, it's supposed to sound that way. It's the electrohydraulic power steering. I happen to like it, even though it makes some people think it is an electric vehicle.

What you're most likely hearing is the whine of the power steering ... it's normal and there's nothing to be concerned about.

It's probably an unrelated phenomenon, but check out the forum thread on "steering wheel clicking"...
