Noisy engine on acceleration

Just got my Cooper back from the garage after getting a new steering rack and when I accelerate the engine seems to be louder, almost straining. Sounds a bit like my old 205 gti which had problems with the tappets amongst other things. I took it straight back to the dealer and they had a quick look at it and said it needs a new belt and tensioner.

Just wanted to get some thoughts on this.
