whistling supercharger any ideas??

I have a december 2002 mcs and have done 4000 miles in it. From about 3000 accompanying the usual whine of the supercharger i hear a whistling noise as well. it is especially noticable when i depress the clutch to change gear when revs were previously above 3000. please help as i do notmknow whehter this is normal or not and i want to have some knowledge before going to my dealer with the problem so they arent able to fob me off and say it is fine without checking it. also i might need to tell them what is wring with it as bmw technicians seem not to know much about supercharger systems through lack of previous experience.

please help

thanks,

gillsg

I had this intermittant problem w/ my S. Loud, high pitched whistle that drove me nuts. There were reports of a hole in the rubber at the supercharger intake plenum making a whistling noise. Also a thought that the green gasket at the supercharger being defective. The last and possibly the closest guess was a gearbox issue. Mine has disappeared....for now. When it was happening it was so loud and high pitched that it became embarrassing. It only happened over 40 mph and only under throttle, not while coasting in gear and not in neutral revving the engine.
There's an old thread at minicooperonline "under the bonnet" forum where I posted this issue way back when.

It's certainly not a particularly common issue.

Maybe one of our resident 'covert' MINI techs can shed some light?

Looks like you could be in the hands of your dealer, which shouldn't be a bad thing.

I had the same problem. check the black rubber hose attached to the valve cover- It is the passenger side one (U.S.A.left hand drive). Mine got oil soaked and very flexible where it would collapse and make the whistling sound. I replaced it with a more rigid one and the sound has disappeared.

Mine's done it since I installed my Alta intake. Gotten so used to it I'd forgotten until this thread. Guess I'll have a look at the breather tube.

also i have heard this problem associated with the aircon compressor, an easy check is to get the noise to occur and turn the aircon off.
